In January 1970, the City-County Planning Board and the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Civil Defence Office prepared this report on community shelters in the event of a nuclear attack. The plan was under contract to the Naval Facilities Engineering Command in Charleston, South Carolina for a whopping $36k back in September 1966. By 1975, the county planned to have 126 fallout shelters available to the public. You may have seen some of the fallout shelter signs at government buildings, churches, and schools!

This wonderful time capsule comes complete with a special feature section of the Winston-Salem Journal detailing the locations for local fallout shelters and “where to go and what to do…to save your life!” In addition, it has a detailed and illustrated section on “How to Set Up a Fallout Shelter at Home.”
