Next week, on Thursday, November 7 at 8 PM, the “Our State” show on UNCTV will air a segment about the WW II Weeksville Naval Air Station, near Elizabeth City, NC.

In early 1942, German u-boats were sinking an average of one ship every 2 1/2 days off the Carolinas / Virginia coast. When Weeksville went into operation a few months later, the number of sinkings was quickly reduced to one every 2 1/2 months.

The two extraordinary blimp hangars at Weeksville were designed by a man from Winston-Salem. One of them is still standing and in use. I doubt if his name will be mentioned in the segment, so I will post full information on that in the next few days so that when the segment airs, you will be in the know. Stay tuned.
