In response to the JFK post, someone sent me an interesting link. If you are under 40, you have never seen a live TV commercial for cigarettes in the US because Congress banned them effective January 2, 1971. The last cigarette TV commercial, for Virginia Slims, ran at 11:59 PM, January 1, 1971 on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, who often smoked on the air.

The ones below for Winston (3), Salem (3) and Camel (2) ran from the late 1950s to the late 1960s At that time, both Winston and Salem were the number 1 selling cigarettes in their categories in the US. The “I’d walk a mile for a Camel…” line was first used in the 1920s.
